    First Light is built for participants, not spectators — for the people who'd rather look early and be wrong than wait for certainty and be late.

    If you need the outcome guaranteed before you'll start, this isn't for you, and that's fine. But if "you're early" sounds like an opening instead of a warning, you're who we built it for.

    We're not chasing thousands of members. We're after the right few in the room — and we'd rather keep a seat empty than fill it with someone waiting to be sure.

    I'm Derek Bailey. I'm an entrepreneur in the real sense — a salesman from day one. I haven't had a job that wasn't a hundred percent commission since I was about nineteen. Eat what you kill, or own the thing. It's the only way I've ever known how to work.

    Florida property sales. Temporary staffing. Hospitality. Digital billboards. Derek Automotive. Exeeder. WolvertonBailey and the patented Counterpoise engine. How does a kid from New Orleans end up at the head of all that?

    Here's the secret. I catch everything while it's still on the napkin. That's the only way somebody who didn't start with money ever gets to really big money — because once it's off the napkin, I can't afford to get in. And neither can you.

    Getting in early, while it's still just an idea a few people believe in, is the whole game. That's what I'm really asking when I ask: are you like me?

    Del, our chief technology officer, worked for me once. Then he called me with an idea for an engine — mechanical, except Del's an electrical engineer. I said I'm in. Now there's a patent on the engine idea. All my stories go like that: I bet on someone smarter than me in their lane, and I'm the difference in mine. I've lost a few times, too — that's part of the deal.

    Del is like me, so when we met Dr. Poovey, a brilliant man who'd put real money into his idea and didn't have enough to show for it yet, we said let's go. The 'professional' investor guys told him to call back when he was further along — that's what you say when you're already rich and you only buy certainty. We're built different. We said we're in. Because we could see we were the thing he was missing: the balance, the push to get it off the bench and into the world. Are we crazy? No. Sure things don't need people like us. We look for the projects where we're the difference — and photonic-logic is the big one.

    We are going to make this the biggest technology of the next eighty years.
